NAMM 2015: Seymour Duncan Releases Vise Grip Compressor Pedal — Demo Video

Follow Guitar World's coverage of the 2015 Winter NAMM Show with gear news and videos on GuitarWorld.com, updates on Facebook and photos and more on Twitter and Instagram.

The Seymour Duncan Vise Grip Compressor is a studio-grade soft-knee compressor designed for guitarists who want to take control of the dynamics of their sound, from a subtle smoothing-out of peaks and valleys to the most squished and pinched extremes and everywhere in between.

The Blend knob lets you add as much or as little of the original signal as you like to the compressed sound, while the Mid/Full/High lets you choose the character of the blended signal by deciding what frequency range of the dry signal is blended in with the wet.

The Sustain knob determines how long your notes will ring out and the Attack control regulates how quickly the compressor reacts to your initial pick attack. Higher settings give you a late attack that lets your picking dynamics come through before the compression kicks in. And the Volume control does more than just let you match the output with your bypassed sound: you can also use it as a boost while taking advantage of the Blend and Mid/Full/High controls.

The Vise Grip can give you a simple dynamics adjustment—like a subtle or extreme increase in sustain for country "chicken pick'n” or a little extra clarity, body and volume for a clean solo—or you can use it for more intense effects like a classic 'squished funk' rhythm scratch or to introduce a lo-fi, treble-heavy edge which is perfect for a garage-band vibe.

Then you can blend in just the right amount of the uncompressed signal and let the Mid/Full/High switch restore sparkle to the high end, fatten up the uncompressed signal for increased harmonic overtones, or simply make sure your effected sound remains consistent with your bypassed guitar tone. It's also useful for keyboard, mandolin or any instrument where excessive dynamic range is an issue.

The Vise Grip Compressor is assembled at the Seymour Duncan Factory in Santa Barbara, California, and like all Seymour Duncan Effects Pedals is 100% true-bypass.

Here's a new lesson video by acoustic master Mike Dawes.

In the clip, which you can check out below, Dawes teaches a technique for fretting and plucking a harmonic note — all with the right hand.

As he says, this leaves your left hand free to do other things. What those are is up to you!

Dawes continues to expand on this principle with more complex and wonderful-sounding techniques for you to try. Take a look at our video and try it out.

Follow along with Guitar World's coverage of the 2015 Winter NAMM Show with nonstop gear news items and videos on GuitarWorld.com's official NAMM 2015 Zone, updates on Facebook and photos and more on Twitter and Instagram.

Building on the breakout momentum generated by its return to the guitar gear scene, Supro USA is now set to launch another trio of vintage-inspired amp models with reverb and tremolo at the 2015 Winter NAMM show.

These new, American-made, vintage-derived combo amps feature independent bass and treble controls, tube-driven spring reverb and power-tube tremolo.

The authentic Supro circuit topology found in these models puts the tremolo after the reverb, re-creating the ethereal, haunting shake of amplitude-modulated reverb that is central to the unique character of the original Valco/Supro designs. These vintage-styled, all-tube amps feature custom-voiced, US-made speakers, distinctive Blue Rhino Hide tolex and most importantly, the stunning atmospheric quality of the mid 60s Supro reverb amps.

1650RT Royal Reverb: This 2x10" vintage reissue with Reverb and Tremolo is the heavy hitter of the bunch with headroom to spare and a huge, punchy tone. The Royal Reverb's stout 6L6 output stage can be configured for Class A or Class AB power at 35, 45 or 60 watts with selectable 5U4 tube or solid state rectifier modes. Street price on the Royal Reverb is $1499 USD.

1648RT Saturn Reverb: This 1x12" future-retro combo with Reverb and Tremolo is both lightweight and easily coaxed into raucous tube overdrive. The Saturn Reverb shares the same 6973 based, Class-A power plant as the top selling Supro Dual-Tone amplifier, but a slightly lower power rating of 15-watts due to its use of a vintage-correct 5U4 tube rectifier. Street price on the Saturn Reverb is $1399 USD.

1622RT Tremo-Verb: This 1x10" combo with Reverb and Tremolo is the ultimate compact vintage tone machine. Small and lightweight enough to carry around town, the Tremo-verb reissue uses 6973 power tubes to push 25-watts of pure vintage American Class-A tone. Despite its small size and single 10" speaker, this modern incarnation of the Tremo-verb is easily loud enough to keep up with a drummer and be clearly heard in a club setting. Street price on the Tremo-verb is $1299 USD.

Adrian Belew and members of Snarky Puppy will join Supro president David Koltai at 3:30 pm on Friday at Booth 5218 to make a special announcement from the NAMM show floor. Stay tuned for more new product info from Supro!

NAMM 2015: Boss Announces VE-1 Vocal Echo Stompbox for Vocalists

Boss has announced the VE-1 Vocal Echo, a compact stompbox designed for singers.

Packed with a selection of impressive ambience effects plus automatic pitch correction, doubling, and more, the VE-1 allows performing vocalists to easily enrich their sound with studio-quality processing.

Battery powered and affordable, the VE-1 also features USB connectivity for capturing vocal sounds in a computer.

Like the other members of Boss’ popular VE family of vocal processors, the VE-1 makes it simple for any singer to get great sounds right away. The panel is intuitive to operate, with dedicated knobs and buttons for various functions and a large footswitch for turning the VE-1 on/off while performing.

The VE-1 includes seven ambience presets created with sophisticated processing, giving users quick access to a range of pleasing effects that beautifully compliment the voice. The Level knob controls the depth of ambience, while the Tone knob is used to vary the sound color from dark to bright.

Pressing the Double button instantly adds a rich effect that sounds like two singers singing the same part together, while the Enhance button evens out vocals for a more refined sound.

Automatic chromatic pitch correction is also included in the VE-1. A single-knob control allows users to dial in everything from minor correction for pitch stability to the exaggerated tuning effects heard on many of today’s biggest hits.

The Memory function lets vocalists store a favorite setting for instant recall at any time. Both the Memory and Double functions can be controlled from an optional footswitch such as the BOSS FS-7.

Via USB, users can record their voice along with the VE-1’s effects directly into their computer. This is ideal for creating songs in music production software, and also provides a simple way to achieve polished vocal sounds while recording performances for social media videos.

The VE-1’s XLR input is compatible with a variety of pro microphone types, including condenser mics that require phantom power. An XLR output provides an easy connection to a PA mixer, while the Phones/Line Out jack allows for private practice and connecting to line-level devices.
